Maybe: HPV is a family of viruses well known for their ability to go into hibernation for decades and reappear in nearby tissue. Having a worrisome area removed by freezing may get it all, but you will still need to follow through with checkups. Cervical cancer is associated with HPV but occasionally arises with HPV negative persons. It is great you removed a worrisome area &amp; you may never have another.

HPV causes cancer: Yes- in fact there are more than 100 strains of HPV -and a few of them cause cancer. That can be cervical cancer, anal cancer, or some other cancers (like head and neck). The good news is there is a vaccine for HPV that helps prevent some of this from happening. Although the age indication goes up to 26, you should talk to your doc - if you have a lot of risk factors, you might benefit from it.

This is a great question. HPV can be found to be negative but still be present in small numbers that we can not detect.  The numbers rise and fall with the strength of the immune system. The immune system is affected by everything that we do i.e. Stress, diet, period, or taking medication . Be concerned but remember that the same immune system is on duty everywhere!  Anal pap.

Accepted Answer

No need for retest: It was a mistake to have another HPV test. if you have been sexually active in the past 5 years, probably you have been reexposed and likely reinfected with HPV. A positive result now probably would not be recurrence of your past infection. Regardless of  your new test result, you can safely assume that previous infection is gone and no longer contagious. Your more recent infection(s)? Maybe.

HPV virus: The HPV virus can resolve on its own. It can lay dormant  in some cases and reappear later on. One can reacquire it from new sexual partners.  Your pap smears have been normal for 5 years which is good indication that it is not active at this time.

Low: It is unlikely you are carrying high risk cervical hpv if your test has been negative for 5 years.  That being said, HPV is rarely tested in women who are less than 30.  In addition, there are many strains of HPV that wouldn't be tested for with any test

Foul discharge: The foul smelling discharge may be a BV that is not necessarily caused by HPV, but more likely another infectious cause.  Get the D/C tested and treated for a possible BV.  best wishes.

About the same: Probably about the same for either cervical or anal HPV. For both, cancer can develop as soon as a few months or not for 20 or more years.

Hard to say: The frequency of HPV positive college age women prior to the vaccine approached 70% in some studies. Some would eventually develop cervical cancer over the years or decades. Most would not. Pap smears were the most effective method of early detection long before the link to HPV was known. Your OBGYN keeps up with the current suggested frequency based on your specific case.

hi, is cervical hpv and oral hpv related? i could have cervical hpv from cin 2/3. i'm worried it's in my mouth :(

Possibly: Hpv is an opportunist organism and the strains related to cancer can show up in anal, oral, penile and cervical locations. If exposed, they may or may not end up infesting these areas and triggering the related changes in tissue. If concerned have an ENT look for evidence of the disease in your oral cavity.
