Fixable non-disease: Cerumen is product of the outer half of the ear canal & will shed spontaneously in most.For those with a clean ear fetish for self or kids, the process of cramming a qtip in an ear canal can cause this in some who don't have the problem naturally, pusning wax further in & complicating removal. Wax softening drops, waterpick wash out&removal with tools are all possible temporary solutions.

Wax: It is a hard ball of wax in the ear sometimes as a result of using q-tips. An ear wax removal kit can be purchased at the pharmacy to help or you may need to see the doctor.

CAN'T hear: Cerumen (ear wax) impaction causes hearing loss because the wax is so built up it causes 'an an ear plug'.  Patients also 'feel a full feeling in ear'.  When the impaction is severe i send patients to an ENT (ear, nose, throat) doctor who can remove wax with a suction device using a microscope.

Ear wax: Normally, ear wax will exit the ear canal as the skin grows out and flakes off.  In some people, the canal is too narrow for this natural process to take place.  Others are users of 'earbuds' or cotton swabs; both can push the wax further into the ear.  Only trained professionals should try to remove stuck (impacted) wax.  
Do not place anything into your ear canal.  You can do serious harm.

Inflammation: Likely inflammation or infection. The ear wax (cerumen) likely has gotten wet. You now probably have an external otitis (swimmer's ear). See an ENT to remove ear wax and treat.

Safety: Pick up an over the counter ear wax kit with drops and some sort of bulb/syringe to gently wash some of the wax out.  If that doesn't work, or you have increasing pain or hearing loss in ear, go see your local ENT doc.
