Uncommon: While reflux can occur in children, having a hiatal hernia is less common.  Most hiatal hernias develop over the course of a person's life.

Sometimes: A ventral hernia is any hernia that is present along the front surface of the abdominal wall.  This is most often seen at the umbilicus (belly button).  Umbilical hernias in children are very common.  It is generally recommended to wait till after age 5 to repair these hernias unless the child is having pain due to the hernia or it is very large, since they will often close spontaneously.

Exercising ; Hernias: Exercising does not usually cause hernias. Rather, exercising may cause previously asymptomatic hernias to become progressively larger and/or more symptomatic. Aerobic and cardiovascular type exercises  have minimal effect. However strength and resistance exercises that increase pressure within the abdomen will cause hernias to generally enlarge and become progressively more symptomatic.

If there is a: hernia that contains a loop of bowel that becomes strangulated - then death could be possible (esp if untreated).. But, garden variety hernias don't usually cause death. Please see doctor if you believe you have a hernia. Take care.

Incisional bleeding : A hematoma associated with a surgical incision would typically occur due to small amount of bleeding under the staples or sutures shortly after closure.  It can keep that section of skin and tissue from healing as quickly as it should and could cause a small opening that will need wound care to heal more slowly.

High strain exercise: Exercises that involve straining against a closed diaphragm can lead to hernias in someone prone to them.  These are exercises where you are holding your breath and straining to lift.  These forces strain muscle fibers and can lead to weakening of the muscle and the tough fibrous sheaths around them, and then, a hernia.  If you suspect a hernia, see your doctor.
