Many things!: Most common cause of enlarged cup to disk ratio, "enlarged optic nerve", would be glaucoma.  Other causes could be; physilogic (you were born that way and it is genetic, and of no significance), tumor, compression of the optic nerve by something (a mass), nutritional.

I think you may have an optic nerve condition and the ophthalmologist tried to explain it to you in layman terms and the description was misunderstood somehow. I suggest you go back to the ophthalmologist and have him/ her explain it again. Sorry not good help.
