Obstruction: Fecal impaction usually causes obstruction in the large intestine.  The disease often occurs in old and/or debilitated persons and they may not complain of any symptoms.  Despite obstruction of the intestine, sometimes there is spurious diarrhea due to partial obstruction.  Fecal impaction is sign of poor care.

The cause: Fecal impaction is a relatively common cause of constipation.  Generally is a result of dehydration and low fiber and sometimes exacerbated when defecation is avoided for a period of time.  Manual disimpaction with a lubricated gloved finger may be necessary.  Notably, this can cause diarrhea as well if liquified fecal matter oozes around the impaction.

: Constipation is a know side effect of this medication - You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods. Consult this site for fiber foods.

i take a stimulant laxative once every 1-3 weeks. as i have ibs. can it cause a fecal impaction?

: If you have IBS with constipation, he fecal impaction would be due to lack of adequate bowel movements. Perhaps in addition to adequate fluid intake and ingestion of soluble fiber,  taking a daily stimulant laxative like senokotS would promote regular bowel movements. There is now a prescription medication that can be quite effective also. A gastroenterologist can advise &amp; follow you best.

can hysterectomy cause issues w constipation for 5 mo's post op? also experienced fecal impaction twice. my obgyn surgeon found no signs of prolapse.

Probably not but ...: You might have gotten some adhesions post surgery. See a good GI surgeon for consult or a good gastroenterologist.

: "RUQ pain" may be related to inflammation of the gall bladder.  Ask your GYN physician about a scan to determine whether chronic gall bladder disease may be contributing to the RUQ pain.

Can't defecate: Stool becomes hard and dry; it's difficult for the colon to move it along, and difficult (and painful) for the hard stool to pass through the anal canal. Lack of water in diet can contribute; chronic use of opiate pain medscan too. Rarely people can have motility disorders of the intestines that contribute to fecal impaction. In extreme cases hard stool can wear through the intestinal wall.
