Cats and allergies: Short answer is yes. The mechanism is that dander from the cat will be inhaled . The  tubes of your longs are very sensitive to irritants .  If you're if bronchial tubes are constantly irritated you will have a chronic response or chronic bronchitis , or that is , may have.

Not hair, dander: Cat allergies are due to the proteins in skin and saliva.  The cat licks its fur and the protein ends up on the hair. So yes, cat-spit coated hair can cause allergy symptoms. Highly unusual: but one can never say never in medicine. The scenario I can think of is when one has severe asthma and is allergic to cat. In which case, the cat exposure can lead to a severe exacerbation resulting in death.   However I have not seen a person dying from cat allergy per se.

OTC: Cat allergies are treated the same as other environmental allergies. Use an antihistamine such as claritin, zyrtec, or allegra.  There is also zaditor (ketotifen) available for eye symptoms.

Immunotherapy: If you have a cat allergy, that means that your body has developed a sensitivity to the cat allergen, fel d1.  The only way to "fight" this allergy is to start immunotherapy, as this will develop a "natural" tolerance to the cat allergy.  There are no other alternatives available.  Medications will help control the symptoms (essentially suppressing the symptoms while you are on medication).

New home for kitty?: There is no way to truly "cure" cat allergy.  The best way to minimize symptoms of course is to remove the cat from the home.  If that is not possible, allergy injections to cat are very effective.  They may not completely "cure" the allergy, but can diminish them significantly.
