Talk to doctor 1st: Sometimes it's okay to stop antibiotics early, but talk to your doctor 1st.  With bites, we worry about bacteria being pushed into the skin and causing a deeper infection, that's why we routinely give abx even before we see an infection - it's more to prevent infection. I usually recommend my patients start something like Monistat for the yeast inf, but discuss w/ me about the abx before stopping.

Should: Augmentin is the initial drug chosen to treat a cat bite. Soaking the finger could over hydrate the wound &amp; interfere with tissue healing. Using a warm compress would provide the heat needed to improve circulation &amp; improve healing without the excess tissue water.

If : If the swelling has not started to subside and your finger is tender to the touch then you may be dealing with an infectious process or other post-surgical complication. You need to call the doctor that performed your surgery and inform him/her of your symptoms. They will either see you in clinic or advise you to go to the er.

Catbite: Get the area clean with frequent irrigation in the shower. Make sure you are current in your tetanus and be placed on antibiotics. Cats have very dirty mouths. All the best.

Cat bites -high risk: If the bite broke the skin, it is a high risk of causing infection.  Up to eighty percent of cat bites become infected.  One organism, Pastuerella multocida, is known for causing infection within 24 hours.  I usually perform a wash-out/irrigation of the cat bite and provide a short course of antibiotics (e.g. Augmentin), especially with puncture wounds, as well as updating tetanus.
