Depends: I did not appreciate the full nature of your condition, you should certainly be checked.  People with hamstring injuries can heal without surgery and many times patients can walk through the process.  The ligament and cartilage nature of the injury described depends on the actual structures involved and the associated displacement, stability, etc.  Thank you for your question.

Yes.: You can strain/tear a hamstring and not have the bruising. What your describing sure sounds like a hamstring strain. It will heal, but will probably require physical therapy to restore good function.

Varible: Highly variable depending on the location of the tear (proximal/ midsubstance / distal), the degree of the tear (partial / complete), the mass of the hamstring  involved (it is made up of 3 muscles) and finally what type work you are trying to return to (sedentary / active). Unless highly strenuous job few days off with use of crutches/ thigh sleeve/ physiotherpy. Sports longer. Doc to help guide.

Torn Hamstring: It depends on the severity. In general grade 1 strains usually recover in under 3 weeks. Grade 2 strains/tears - 4 to 6 weeks. Grade 3 tears - 8 to 12 weeks. Typically surgery is not recommended and recovery involves rest, stretching, and controlled strengthening. However, if 2 of the 3 tendons are avulsed from the origin, early surgery to repair the tendon to the origin would be an option.

Rest first...: U want to rest a  'torn' hamstring first until it is nearly healed3-6 wks then can begin stretching : u can sit down and place your leg out straight , move your ankle back while u bend from the hip and touch your toes or heel. @ the same time u can have your opposite leg(knee) flexed to stretch your quads on other extremity. Maintain stretch and then switch sides... Best of luck!

Unknown: Severe leg pain can be caused by many things.  Think about what's in there-blood vessels (disease can cause pain), muscles (rarely if ever a primary cause of pain), tendons and ligaments (can be torn in accident), joints (hip and knee can both cause pain), and nerves.  In addition, damage to various structures in the back can cause leg pain.  To find out, see doctor and get mri.

Cycling: You need to focus on low impact exercises that will not aggravate your back or your hamstring.  A stationary bike usually will provide just that.  Try the recumbant style for more support for your back.

i torn my hamstring (undiagnosed by md) in highschool after a 40 yard sprint. couldnt walk, and my right hamstring was purple. this was 2008 summer. i still can explode or making sudden explosive movements as i feel the pain of it. didnt heal right?

: Yes, you may have the sequelae of a severe hamstring injury (grade 3, a complete tear) which did not heal perfectly.
