DX OF PREGNANCY: The OTC Pregnancy tests are positive several days AFTER a missed period.  I would not attempt to diagnose a pregnancy unless you miss a normal period.  If you are desirous of pregnancy, good luck to you.

Too many: New Genetic tests can detect more diseases than you can imagine. Just tell your doctor that you want to be tested for every disease that a test is available.

I am not sure how: Far along you are in your pregnancy. Many practices recommend your first OB appointment at a particular week of pregnancy.  Were you looking for services covered by your insurance agency? Self pay? Home pregnancy tests are very accurate when done correctly.

Probably not: Usually takes 14-20 days for it to show up on home test... Blood test slightly more sensitive.

In the days before: Pregnancy test were so easy to use and available, doctors suspected pregnancy if the cervix had a blue coloration.  However we have much more accurate ways of telling now, namely a quick urine pregnancy test.

Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD: A week is about the time period when a pregnancy test would turn positive. So I would give it another few days and repeat the test.

Blood test can tell: you that you are pregnant. Measuring the hormone in the blood (hcg) may tell how far along. But by 9 weeks there should be a heart beat. A detailed ultrasound is needed to take a "look" at what is going on.

Time & technique: Both urine and blood tests for HCG are very accurate in measuring hcg. It is better to do either test 4-5 days after a missed period.  Negative pregnancy test done after one month of the last episode of sex is a good indication that the person is not pregnant. You should repeat the test 7-10 days later for an added measure.
