Possibly: There's not much reason to take both together, but you can. If you have severe acid reflux can try otc prevacid, is much stronger. Zantac (ranitidine) comes in 75 and 150.

Yes but...: Both medications are safe to take during pregnancy and there are no drug interactions. However, they are essentially the same so there's no reason to take both.

Yes: But if your symptoms are severe enough, it would be a good idea to consult a gastroenterologist.   Both drugs do the same thing in suppressing acid and you are just doubling up on the drug by taking both together. Do note that zantac (ranitidine) may cause diarrhea in some people.

GERD: It is fine on occasional basis. Zantac is first generation and Pepcid is second generation. There is no drug interaction between two. Even third generation Omeprazole is ok to take of symptoms are severe.

Anti-acid medication: The first question is why are you taking 2 medications.  The medications you mentioned  block acid production in the stomach.  Patients who have reflux may need these medications long-term to prevent erosions and ulcers of the esophagus and stomach.  Multiple medications are often prescribed for short-term use especially if the patient has ulcers.  I recommend checking with your healthcare provide

Heartburn: For classic heartburn, zantac or pepcid gives quicker relief than ppi's such as prilosec or nexium (esomeprazole). It's also helpful to follow a bland,low fat diet and avoid alcohol,caffeine,chocolate and tobacco. I wouldn't expect any significant side effects from zantac or pepcid.

Safe: I see no interaction problems taking these medications except that zantac and pepcid are basically the same type of medication and it is unnecessary to take them together. Your pharmacist can be helpful in answering questions about medications.

Similar drugs: Pepcid and Zantac (ranitidine) are similar drugs because they are both histamine blockers. It's doubtful that Zantac (ranitidine) will give you significant relief if Pepcid didnt. Try Omeprazole instead which works differently (Prilosec). See your doctor ASAP as you likely need further evaluation.
