The recommended dosage of metformin for diabetics is 1000 mg twice daily, so you might talk to your doctor about increasing the dosage. GI side effects: Metformin very commonly causes gastrointestinal side effects such as indigestion, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. If your bm is loose or watery, it means your GI transit time is very fast in which case you are likely to see the whole pill. If you haven't tried yet, you could try extended- release form of metformin such as fortamet, which causes less GI side effects.

Metformin: Metformin is metabolized through the kidneys. If kidney function is monitored through serum creatinine, metformin is safe in does up to 2400mg. Er, extended release is designed for once a day dosing and 1000mg is an appropriate dose as long as kidneys are functioning.

: Prepare the food well and stay well hydrated. If you have canned fruit or vegetables, add a serving to your meal. Avoid excessive carbohydrates. Ask a neighbor to buy fresh produce if they are able to do so. Avoid excessive salt by rinsing canned vegetables before use. Watch for excessive thirst and please follow up with your physician.

Frequency: A single reading of 200 after eating is not as concerning as repeated levels of over 200 over several days.  Many factors affect post-prandial (after meal) glucose.  Meals with adequate protein, fat and fiber will help slow glucose absorption and may improve post-prandial glucose levels.  Alternatively diabetic or other meds may need to be increased/adjusted.
