i've been on continuous birth control pills for almost two years. to 'treat' endometriosis. is it normal to randomly spot/ have breakthrough bleeding?

Ans: Yes it is. The birth control alters the hormones. The uterine wall still needs to thin. But no ovulation. So you can get a full period or spotty blessing on and off

Yes: It can sometimes take up to three months for your body to get used to the different hormone levels. Spotting is very common. Take care!

Accepted Answer

Yes: Double ovulation is an interesting phenomenon. Its most commonly seen as having  "twins", "triplets" etc but  some people will end one period but also ovulate shortly after.

Its not bad to stop taking birth controls all together unless you want withdrawal bleeding from lack of the hormones. I'd advise you to continue your birth control unless you are trying to get pregnant.

i missed two active birth control pills and now i am on the placebo pills. my breakthrough bleeding has not come on yet, am i at risk for pregnancy?

Unfortunately, yes: Even with perfect pill use there's still a tiny risk of pregnancy, but once you start missing them, the risk goes up.  The "withdrawal bleeding" that you normally have during the placebo week would be a reassuring sign, but you could take a pregnancy test too. As long as it's been 14 days since your last intercourse, it should be accurate (first morning urine is best). Good luck!

Breakthrough: First check a pregnancy test as even perfect birth control use can lead to a pregnancy (about 3%).  If it continues, I would see your GYN to see if the pill is the source of bleeding or something else.

Too soon to know: Conception, as defined by the generation of a fertilized ovum, occurs within day or so of the sex. However, it takes about 2-3 weeks for the embryo to make enough HCG to produce a positive pregnancy test. Blood test may be done a day after a missed period. Home pregnancy tests should be done 4-5 days after the missed period. If the result is negative repeat the test in 4-5 days. Use first morning urine and follow instructions for the test carefully. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time, every time. You may consider implanted contraceptive, or IUD. 
Practice safe sex. 
Get HPV vaccine.

Consider  estrogen.: Breakthrough bleeding is not dangerous but can be very annoying.  Typically the bleeding will stop if you take a low dose estrogen for a few weeks.   If the bleeding persists then you may consider changing your method of birth control.  Hope this helps.

Several months: It is common to have break through bleeding in the first several months of a new birth control pill.  When bleeding starts it can last several days to several weeks.  If it is still occurring after 3 cycles it may be time to talk to your doctor about other pill formulations.

Usually not: Usually breakthrough bleeding means the hormones aren't in balance with the uterus yet, either because it was the first month on the pill, or the person missed pills, or the hormone formulation isn't right for her.

Accepted Answer

Two pills: An easy way to try is to take two pils a day until the bleeding stops. You may notice some nausea and you'll have to refill your prescription sooner.
