Sometimes: Decreased dim light vision is often caused by cataracts and other conditions that limit light getting to the receptors in the eye. Often, people with nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism or presbyopia whose prescriptions have worsened will notice it most when in dim light. The most important first step to improving vision is an eye exam to determine the cause of decreased vision.

Depends: For individuals with normal retinal function, there is, unfortunately, no way to develop superhero grade night vision.  Conversely, for patients with decreased night vision or “nyctalopia”, as a result of dietary vitamin a deficiency, vitamin a supplementation will hopefully restore normal human grade night vision.  Patients with degenerative conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa, unfortunately, lose night vision and peripheral vision from progressive photoreceptor loss.  Patients with congenital stationary night blindness, cone/rod dystrophies and other degenerative disorders also have photoreceptor loss with loss of night vision.  Although until now there hasn’t been much to offer these patients, research is currently underway investigating a large array of agents which may offer them some hope for the future.

See an eye doctor: There are so many things that can cause poor night vision that it really needs to be explored.  It can be as easy as dry eyes or early cataracts, to as complicated as corneal or retinal problems.  Let an eye doctor do a complete exam.

Field studies: There are some field studies of jamaican fishermen and also some moroccan fishermen and mountain dwellers, pointing to improved night vision with marijuana smoking.  The effect seem dose-related, and further study was suggested. Needs evaluation: Is the vision from the right eye poor at night compared to the left eye or does it simply not adapt to the dark well at night compared to the left eye?  Most likely is a need for eyeglass correction for that eye such as modest myopia.  It would be rare to have a unilateral dark adaptation problem  there are other possibilities which your ophthalmologist can sort out for you if persistent.

VITAMIN A: is the major "supporter" of NIGHT VISION and there are a number of eye supporting nutritional/vitamin Preparations.. Ask you Pharmacist for a recommendation!

Yes & cataract: Loss  of night vision  is  almost always a symptom. Of cataract.   Vitamin a deficiency would br the other.  See an eymd.

should i consider getting reflective contacts for night vision?

Accepted Answer

? Reflective: I am not aware of reflective contact lenses. There is also no such thing as contacts for night vision. Most people become a little nearsighted at night. Easier to just get glasses for night which have a mild myopic correction  in them.
