It depends: Sciatica without numbness, weakness, or bowel or bladder symptoms is often treated with anti-inflammatory medicine like ibuprofen. It is best to avoid activities which can irritate the back like bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting. Walking is usually ok if it doesn't make the pain worse. If the pain is severe, or persists for several weeks, or has other symptoms, it should be evaluated.

Inclusive: Piriformis syndrome causes pain because of sciatic nerve impingement.  Both true sciatica - sciatic neuropathy, and piriformis syndrome - can be evaluated by physical exam, as well as by imaging and electrodiagnostic testing.  These disorders are uncommon, but must be differentiated from a plexopathy or radiculopathy.

Sometimes: If it is switching sides, more than one nerve is involved. Sometimes a very big central disc herniation can cause this. Consider getting an MRI if this is getting worse or not improving.

Ask your surgeon: No one can answer this question better than the person who examined you, viewed your imaging and most importantly saw the pathology during surgery. Sciatic pain, whether sharp, burning, aching, can go away within hours after surgery or last a lifetime. Most commonly severe pain may take 6 to 8 weeks to resolve.

when doing pelvic floor exercises i sometimes get sharp pain in back or sciatica pain running down leg? i have no spine problems.

Sciatic nerve: The sciatic nerve comes out of an area of the pelvic floor muscles.  If you are contracting these muscles or if they are inflamed / irritated the sciatic nerve can be irritated.  Stretching and chiropractic would be helpful.  Also, there are Physical Therapists specifically trained to improve pelvic floor tone.

what are the best stretches for sciatica? pain goes from tailbone through left buttocks down leg into left ankle. is heat or ice better?

Hamstring stretches: Sounds like pressure on a nerve root in your back probably L5 or s1. Stretching the hamstrings may help but i recommend you see a physician and have imaging of the lumbar spine.
