Yes!: I have had many patients who reported having trouble falling asleep during the night, but also stated they slept a lot during the day. This type of insomnia/ hypersomnia combo is circadian in nature and typically common among sedentary patients with little sun exposure, and those with excesive caffeine use, anxiety, or irregular sleep-wake schedules.

Circadian rhythyms: Sleep is basically controlled by a clock in our brain. Depression is believed to cause problems with the clock. This can lead to certain sleep disorders where there is not enough sleep and not restful sleep or to excessive sleep.

i have insomnia i stay awake anywhere from 3 to 5 days at a time but when i do sleep i sleep for about 15 to 20 hours. is it possible for me to have insomnia and hypersomnia?

Ans: Both of these are diagnoses thus in order to gove such a diagnosis you need a complete evaluation. You are best served to see your doctor and find out why you stay up for days at a time. Very bad for your body

Sleep eval: There are wide array of sleep disorders. Often a good history and physical exam can guide give us a good idea. A very common problem for is sleep apnea. But other times, it can be more complicated and include restless leg syndromes or central apneas. A sleep study can be very useful. It's possible: Possibly not uncommon. Your sleep has become out of control and there may also be other parts of your life that are too. A good therapist working with appropriate doctors (sleep specialists, pcp, neurologist, etc.) would be able to diagnose and treat you. It might be the only way your body can find a way to get what it needs until you get tx. Best!

Accepted Answer

Insomnia: Yes.  Oftentimes insomnia can cause or be effect of hypersomnia conditions.  Caution because idiopathic insomnia is very rare and may be the effect of another underlying sleep disorder specifically if hypersomnia is present.  If concerned please contact your pcp or sleep specialist because formal testing can be very helpful to weed this out and is generally not done in people with only insomnia.

can accupuncture cause you to have hypersomnia instead of insomnia?

It depends: It depends on how the acupuncturist assessed you before doing the treatments.  If you were without sleep for a prolonged time, your body may be catching up on needed sleep.  Also, medications you're taking may now be having stronger effect. There are many physicians who do acupuncture -- having knowledge and experience in both worlds.  Please talk with your acupuncturist about what's going on.

Sleep problems: Your sleep cycle can be disrupted in all kinds of ways.  If you have insomnia or multiple awakenings at night, you can have hypersomnia in the daytime.  Many   depressed people have sleep disruption -- it can be hypersomnia or insomnia.  Medications or other stimulants can greatly complicate this.  In complex cases it's best to work with a sleep medicine physician and psychiatrist.

i am on adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) for hypersomnia and take it as soon as i wake up, but it is causing insomnia. will it eventually stop causing insomnia?

Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine): Review with your prescribing doctor the dose adjustment and possibility of adding nighttime medications such as Clonidine or rebecca or kapvay.
