Screening test: The so called "Mono test" is a screening test and is not specific for a particular infection. At least two different infections, EBV and CMV can give a positive result. There are false positives with this test and like any other screening test the results of this test need to be confirmed.

Yes, Mono test is: Not a specific test for a given disease. Infection with many viruses can cause a positive "mono test". The commonest viruses are epstein barr virus and cytomegalovirus and a few other infections, so, it can lead to mis-diagnosis. See this site for more info.

my dad has mono(test conf) -no symp. he's with my 2yo abt 2hrs, 2x a week. no food/utensil sharing but close interaction. how likely is son to have it?

Little risk: Infectious mono is rare beyond age 20-25. However, assuming your dad's diagnosis is correct, it's not so easily transmissible -- usually by sex or intimate kissing. He should use common sense hygiene and avoid directly exposing your son to his saliva. But normal child-grandfather interactions pose little if any risk. (Your child is at much higher risk of this virus from kids in day care etc.)

Monotest: A monotest may be negative in the early stage of infectious mononucleosis and turn positive after a week or two. If your liver enzymes and CBC with differential cell count show no abnormalities, the mono has cleared. Lymphoma isn't often diagnosed by simple blood tests and requires a physical exam, xrays , scan and biopsies for definitive diagnosis.

Get yourself chk'd: The sudden bad abdominal pain radiating to the back does suggest that you should get yourself checked. Spleen rupture is a known complication of mono and should be excluded. Only an examination and close follow up will reveal if all is well.

i was negative for hiv after 6 weeks post exposure but they also said i was positive for mono. does hiv cause a positive mono test? i wa positive for both antigen and antibodies. worried my hiv test my have been misread by lab or not processed at all?

Herpangina?: This may be an infection with the coxsackie virus. It's miserable, affects the back of the throat with blisters / little ulcers, and is something one simply has to recover from. Vigorous physical exercise may be a big help right now. Best wishes.
