how do you get lyme disease?

Bite of infected tic: Lime disease is spread by ticks that have acquired the germ in the past and it stays in their system. A tick bite from another of the same species without the LD germ will not do it. The tick must get on your body, settle in for a feeding & feed long enough to pass the germ to you (hours).

could you get lyme disease from a mosquito? i've been bite numerous times while sleeping and have a bullseye rash on my arm.

No: Mosquitos do not carry Lyme Disease.  Maybe you had a tick bite that you didn't see.  If you have a bullseye rash, then I would be worried about Lyme.  See your doctor and have blood work done.

Spirochete in fleas: The organism (borellia sp.) that causes lyme disease has been found in fleas and mosquitos but has not yet been found to contribute to transmission of lyme disease in humans this way.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Unfortunately yes.  Our immune systems are very challenged by lyme disease, so a past history of lyme in no way lessens your risk of getting it again.  If someone is currently ill with lyme disease they & are bitten by a tick carrying a different stain of borrelia burgdoferi (the causative bacteria of lyme) they can even become newly infected with that second strain while still ill with the first!

No: There is no permanent immunity.

Accepted Answer

Not unless...: You have a tick bite that devolpes a bullseye ring, and/or you become ill after a tick bite.  We do not routinely test.

how can you get treated for lyme disease early when it's so hard to diagnose?

Accepted Answer

Not hard to diagnose: Most patients with lyme disease display the characteristic rash and associated symptoms, which makes presumptive diagnosis easy.  If one tries to diagnose it using antibody testing you might wait too long to treat effectively.  If you are in an area where this is common, have symptoms compatible with lyme you should be treated presumptively.   May cause your antibody reactions to remain negative.

Blood tests good: Too many to list. Just check with lab for the statistics on that particular test

Deer ticks - Ixodes: Certain ticks are associated with certain diseases. For Lyme disease, classically the 'deer tick' is described- Ixodes scapularis. Deer ticks go through several stages in their life cycle-and the nymphs or younger ones can be extremely small-maybe as big as a pin head. The adults are easier to spot. Dog ticks are larger and are associated with different tick-borne diseases. Good to take precaution
