is there one medicine for spasticity and muscle spasms? associated with neuropathy. which is recommended??

Accepted Answer

No: There are multiple medications we use for muscle spasticity to varying degrees of help including flexeril, zanaflex, soma, baclofen, Valium, and skelaxin (metaxalone) just to name a few.  Discuss directly with your doctor what would be best for you.

i have had spasticity with full body muscle spasms(especially in feet) and stiffness for 6 weeks. along with light tingling and feeling of weakness in left hand. does this mean i have als? note: i've had two mri's and both came back normal?

: ALS needs a good clinical as well as lab work in addition NRI.  It could be something else too. Pl see a good neurologist. Wish you well

both my kids went swimming yesterday and both coughed a little on water. it's been 19 hours no symptoms should i still worry of secondary drowning?

Accepted Answer

Low risk: Ìf aspiration into the lungs would have occurred, symptoms get progressivly worse, there would be more cough, difficulty breathing and fever. If this has not happened, they're at low risk for problems.

after partial recovery from secondary effects of near drowning, my kid, hospitalized in icu, flexes her body muscles every 30 seconds.why? promising?

Need to ask more: This  situation needs to be discussed with the doctors taking care of her. As a general rule after brain injuries some body movements are abnormal signs ( for ex. There is a kind of jerking movement that affects various muscle groups called myoclonus that is not a good sign, other movements may indicate purposeful or semi purposeful activity. This needs to be discussed with her doctors. Good luck.

my daughter (3) was swimming in our pool fully supervised. she came up from swimming under water and came up coughing and choking on water. im sure she if swallowed or inhaled. it looked as though she coughed out water. should i worry dry drowning?

: She may have swallowed or aspirated some water. If she develops a cough,fever, stridor, or any distress, please follow up with a physician. Otherwise, usually there is no complication based on your description. Observe her closely while in or around water.

my 5 year old was swimming in the pool and inhaled water a few times over the course of the day. his nose seems stuffy now. its been 6 hours since he swam. should i worry about secondary drowning overnight? the pulse ox is 99 right now?

: Does the child have any symptoms like shortness of breath, chest discomfort, coughing? If the child coughed when the water went in, he/she likely coughed out a good amount of the water. If the only symptom is a stuffy nose, he/she is likely ok at this point. If any other symptoms develop, especially breathing difficulties, then go to the nearest ER. There would likely be more symptoms by now.

Depends: The best thing to do when you have a muscle spasm is use what makes you feel better. In many cases it may be heat, but in others it may be ice. Newer injuries tend to respond better to ice because it reduces inflamation. Older injuries that flare up may respond better to heat.

Yes it is possible: Yes, there are muscles on your face and head and they can go into spasm much like any other muscle. It is less common than other areas of the body such as the back, but it is possible. Insufficient hydration is a cause of muscle spasms. See you pcp if the spasm is not going away. Hope that helps!

could you have a muscle spasm or charlie horse in your jaw?

Yes: Sore muscles, muscle spasm are common in people who clench or grind their teeth.  This can also happen from trauma.
Your dentist can help you with this problem.  In the mean time  don't eat chewy or hard foods.  Stick with a soft diet.  Ice packs can help.  Ibuprophen can also help but only for temporary relief.  You need to see a dentist.

Muscle Spasms: There are several causes of muscle spasm from muscle injury, nerve injury and pressure effects on trigger points. Even stress.
