i was diagnosed with genital herpes 10years ago. i stopped taking valtrex (valacyclovir) for 4months and blood test came back negative. could i not have herpes?

No herpes: If the blood test is negative for HSV-1 and/ or HSV-2 IgG  and IgM, then there was no exposure to these types of herpes.

Accepted Answer

It depends: Valtrex (valacyclovir) is to prevent outbreaks to protect you from them and your sex partner. You may still be infectious even when there are no symptoms of an outbreak yet. If you have been monogamous, the same sex partner, it may not be necessary to take it. Have them tested and discuss with your doctor. If you are abstinent, no, you don't need to take it, realizing you could have an outbreak.

Test: Yes. Herpes is best diagnosed with a blood test. There are two versions, one for an acute exposure and one to see if a previous infection has occurred.

Yes: The blood test lets us know that you have the virus lying dormant in your body some where. When your immune system is otherwise compromised due to stress, malnutrition, lack of sleep or other infection the virus will come out of hiding and give the classic symptoms of very small, painful/itchy vesicles

Usually: 4-6 weeks post exposure is usually the amount of time considered necessary for a igg blood test to be appropriate.

can a blood test be determined if a man has genital herpes?

Accepted Answer

Yes and no....: A blood test can tell whether someone is infected with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) and/or HSV2. It doesn't tell if genital or oral; that requires symptoms and/or testing of an outbreak for the virus. Most HSV1 is oral, some genital; almost all HSV2 is genital. The tests aren't perfect, but if you have symptoms that suggest GH or an infected partner, testing can be helpful.

May be: A blood test will reveal if you have been exposed to the virus but will not tell if you have active genital infection.  Examination by a gynecologist and examination of the cells/tissues may be needed for a definitive diagnosis.

Usually not tested: Different states have different requirements for pre-marital tests.  While a blood test can detect history or infection with herpes, I do not know that any state requires it.  If you have genital herpes, you owe it to your potential spouse/partner to disclose it.

Possible: Please discuss this issue with your doctor at your next visit. God forbid the breakouts become an issue, there is treatment to address that.
