Hours to weeks: Longer if a dry surface. You are contagious when you have a sore on your face. But you are also contagious a few days a month when you have no symptoms at all. Since most people already have the virus hsv1, it has no effect on them. Prescription pills are very effective if used correctly, and very safe. Most people who harbor the virus require no treatment since they have no symptoms.

ANSWER: Herpes viruses last for 4 hours on plastic 3  hours on cloth and two hours on the skin..I would use 4 hours as a "safe" time...BTW your ROOM MATE IS A SLOB!

Not long: On most surfaces, maximum survival is measured in a matter of seconds.  It may be prolonged on warm, wet surfaces, but it still remains a very delicate virus outside the body.

Years...a lifetime: The HSV I and HSV II bugs can lie quiescent for indeterminate periods of time without actively replicating and shedding. The best prevention is being proactive: know your sex partner(s) well; always use barriers (condoms); and/or consider refraining from contact.

: Herpes is primarily a skin to skin transmission infection. If the infected person had herpes virus on her hands after touching herself( even with no rash)  it can still be transmitted within that time frame.  I don't know about baby oil, but some oils are said to kill or inhibit herpes type 1 virus.

: There is little or no risk of transmission, even immediately. Don't worry about infecting yourself at a new site; that almost never happens -- the immune system prevents new infections with the HSV type someone already has. In theory, there could be risk to a sex partner, e.g. if that finger then had contact with a partner's genital area. But nobody is known to have caught herpes from fingering.
