could probiotics cause a yeast infection?

Probiotics: That's an interesting question.  Generally, probiotics can help to replenish or maintain the normal flora, and keep things in balance.  However, there is some evidence that probiotics may cause some imbalance, because this extra 'good bacteria' uses up oxygen.  This may then affect the normal balance and precipitate yeast overgrowth.  However, this is not established, it's just a theory.

discharge cause vulva skin raw pain. affects sitting/walking. gynae says its yeast infection, took culture testing awaiting results. my 2nd time having yeast infection. im so sad/hopeless. what to do? i just started probiotics. negative sti/diabete?

: This sounds pretty typical for a vaginal yeast infection, although more severe than most. Probiotics might help prevent yeast infections, but have no effect as treatment. You should have been started on anti-yeast treatment without waiting for any test result:  discuss with your doctor. Or perhaps start self treatment with almost any "azole" cream or suppository; discuss with pharmacist.

Probiotic won't work: If you have had vaginal yeast and have the same symptoms now, you probably can safely treat yourself. A probiotic probably won't work; you need an anti-yeast drug. Look for a product whose active ingredient ends in "azole" (Monistat®, Terazol®, Gyne-Lotrimin® and others). But if in doubt, get advice from the doc that prescribed the antibiotic. If you self treat, call doc if no better in 2-3 days.

Yes-comprehensive Rx: Antibiotics can cause intestinal yeast overgrowth & recurrent vaginal yeast infections. Successful treatment requires not only probiotics but a low-starch diet & antifungal drugs or herbs for months!

Billions of CFu: Use a probiotic that has billions of colonies (cfu) rather than millions. Also look for one that has the "friendly" yeast saccharomyes in it as that especialy helps discourage the "unfriendly" yeast candida.

It depends: All probiotics are not the same and it depends and some probiotics are useless and do not work at all for vaginal yeast infection and others which are sometime and somewhat effective may take days to weeks if they work in my opinion.

Yogurt: First you need to find out why you have the yeast infection and solve the cause.  In the meantime, eating yogurt can really help.

None: First confirm it is a yeast infection (most vaginal discharges are not yeast).  If so, an anti-fungal agent like Monistat or Diflucan (fluconazole) is appropriate.  Probiotics are very good for many other things, but not for yeast infections.

Yes: Probiotics can help restore the normal bacteria but they won't clear the yeast infection. For that you need and antifungal cream that you can buy over the counter or a pill that requires a prescription.
