Lasix (furosemide): Depending on the operative physiology, diuresis  may be effective therapy for CHF with hypotension.

Accepted Answer

Not really: There are alternative diuretics, but all will result in increased urination. You can possibly reduce your body's need for a diuretic by significantly reducing your salt intake, and elevating you legs during the day anytime you are not up and moving around.

i recently had pneumonia. i also have congestive heart failure (diastolic) and copd. i currently am extremely short of breath. xrays show i have partially collapsed lungs due to fluid. i am taking lasix every day. how else can i reinflate my lun?

: That combination of pneumonia,CHF,COPD, bilateral pleural effusions&amp; partially collapsed lungs warrant in hospital care. It appears to me that removal of large pleural fluid by strong doses of diuretics &amp; possible tapping of the chest cavities are mandatory in your treatment. It seems that the CHF is the major factor here. Proceed to the emergency room if you can't reach your MD for instructions.

i'm on entresto, metoprolol, an lasix for heart failure, was recently prescribed macrobid for uti and now i have a tooth infection which i have doxycycline for is it ok to take them both together or should i wait the 5 days til macrobid is done?

: You could ask your doctor if the urine culture is sensitive to doxycycline and then switch to doxycycline alone if it is. If you need to take both antibiotics together, watch for diarrhea as this is a potential side effect of taking both antibiotics at the same time. Good luck!

i just read your response regarding lasix/congestive heart failure. i have a family member with chf & pulmonary hypertension who is also bi-polar. she was taken off lithium due to the lasix & we can't seem to find anything other med that works as well as

Lithium is a great: medication.  It may even be the most effective for him/her.  However, sometimes we have to settle for second best.  There are many mood stabilizers.  Discuss this with his/her doctor.

taking 2.5mg bisoprolol for raised bp only, do not have heart failure.  pulse is between 41-47bpm.  is this too low ? recent bp : 120/67  pulse 45bpm.

A bit slow: It's not dangerous, but many people do feel tired when they're heart rate is that low. If fatigue is an issue for you, you might want to ask about a BP lowering med that won't affect your heart rate. There are so  many!

Go see your doctor: You didn't mention your specific diuretic but there are several from which to choose. Sometimes we use 2 from 2 different classes. You should also make sure that you're taking other appropriate medications such as ace inhibitor (or arb), beta blocker, spironolactone, perhaps digoxin (no mortality benefit), BiDil etc. Check w/nutritionist re avoiding salt. Keep track of daily weight. Good luck!

The risks : for general anesthesia are minimal, sometimes general anesthesia is avoided because not necessary and also does not provide pain relief afterwards

HD: if your kidneys have failed, then the fluid accumulated, will accumlate on your lungs, and legs, depending on how bad the kidney failure is, the soloution would be hemodialysis or at least consult with a kidney specialist (nephrologist)

No: Heart failure happens because the muscle of the heart is too weak because it has a disease that affects the muscles, had heart attacks in the past, has some infiltration into the heart muscle or has been enlarging because hypertension or a virus, or valvular disease caused by streptococcus ( rheumatic fever) or damage to the valves from endocarditis or lupus etc. ( cardiomyopathy).
