help! could soy lead to bowel obstruction?

No medical evidence: To suggest that soy intake will lead to bowel obstruction (that I am aware of), which is usually caused by adhesions from previous surgery or infection, tumors, or inflammatory bowel disease.  It is conceivable that, if you have a partial or intermittent obstruction, high fiber food will aggravate this condition.

i switched my baby's formula from soy milk to elecare. she has not had a bowel movement in a day. is this normal? she also has been spitting up more

Constipation: Soy formulas are usually more constipating that others, but the opposite can be true as well!  The only way to figure out which formula is best for a baby's digestive tendencies is by experience.  It can take up to two weeks after a formula change for the results to be known, so rapid formula changes is best avoided. A common trial sequence is:  cows milk based, lactose-free, soy, elemental.

2w old girl fussy and gassy breastfed/supplemented. pediatrician changed to soy formula. normal bowel movements only during rectal stimulation worried?

Don't worry: First, if at all possible to just breast feed and not supplement formula at all would be best for fussy/gassy infant. Human milk is for human babies. You'll make enough if she feeds from you regularly. Next, it's ok to do rectal stimulation for a little while if that how she can relax her sphincter. MANY babies squeeze their sphincters instead of relaxing it, and then grunt and cry. Normal!

Not normal: Normally bowel movements should not cause pain. A change on bowel habits is a potential " red flag" for lesions in the bowel, including colon cancer. Suggest you see your doctor for evaluation and possible colonoscopy.

Do you have Diarrhea: If you have diarrhea it may make your recatal area painful during defeacation from irritation and constant wiping . If you eat extreme dry food and get constipated that also cause rectal pain and aggravate hemorrhoids.

Bloody bowels: Blood in bowel movement is a serious condition, and needs evaluation please contact your doctor for a complete evaluation. The fact that it is painful makes it more concerning.

Abd pain: This could be the symptoms of dyspepsia or an ulcer. Please try OTC Nexium, (esomeprazole) Prilosec or Tagamet. If it persists please see an MD.  Avoid spicy food and alcohol. thanks

Anal fissure: It could be an anal fissure, which is a small tear in the anus that feels like a paper cut. Other possibility is an external he, orrhoud. my 8m old has been drinking enfamil soy formula,  but had no choice but to buy enfamil gentle ease last night. will hurt him or is a temp switch ok?

Accepted Answer

Depends: A temporary switch between formulas is probably ok, but it depends on why your child was on soy formula. If it was due to a milk allergy, then you need to know that gentlease is cow's milk based.
