40mgm 1 hour before: 40 mgm to be taken one hour before the performance.It works only for performance related anxiety like giving a speech,audition,interview.It is a beta blocker and prevents adrenaline from binding to various beta receptor sites found in heart.lungs and certain parts of autonomic system.Used for this it can slow your heart,cause drowsiness,nausea and lightheadedness in some people.Mostly well tolerat

Best 5mg: Probably best to reduce and then stop but the dose that your taking is probably safe to stop since plain Propranolol (not extended release) is only effective for 4-8 hrs after taken.

Not usually.: Intermittent use should not cause this.  There is a lot of room to move with dosing on propranolol.  You may develop an increased need for meds over time but may just as well be related to increased anxiety!
