Yes: The piriformis syndrome is caused by the piriformis muscle compressing the sciatic nerve. Usually it causes pain and tingling in the buttocks, but if the compression is severe enough it can cause pain down the length of the sciatic nerve in the leg. There are a number of treatments available to avoid surgery. An Orthopedic surgeon or Physiatrist can recommend such modalities

Pyriformis syndrome: Pyriformis syndrome is pain in the buttocks cause by imbalance of the pyriformis muscle that crosses near the sciatic nerve that can cause sciatica just like a herniated disc.  I have had this and there are some great online stretching exercises to help as well as to diagnose this condition.  See your pcp and ask to see a good physical therapist who may help you sort things out.

Most likely disc : The symptoms of piriformis syndrome some time look like disc problem, when you sign of numbness going down to chin this tell me most likely  it is a disc problem in the lumber area. Check it out.

Excellemt Question: Many cases, more than many doctors can imagine, of so called 'sciatica' and due to piriformis syndrome, which is a compression of the sciatic nerve as it travels thru buttock, into leg. A form of 'entrapment syndrome'. Clinical exam makes dx. My mantra: best diagnostic tool between the ears). Causes pain down lower leg; rx is specific stretching exercises+. C a trained physical therapist.

Not seen that but...: I am not aware of leg twitches as being part of the complaints seen in patients with true piriformis syndrome.  Pain, numbness, tingling, difficulties with ambulaton are the predominant symptoms reported as well as weakness in the leg.  In women pain on sexual relations can also be seen.  However, I've seen leg muscle spasms so I could believe twitches if you've been correclty diagnosed.

Piriformis Syndrome: Yes it can be in both legs. This could be other things including vascular ( circulation issues).  Concerned because it comes on with walking.  Suggest you be evaluated by a physician right away.

Sometimes : It's very difficult to differentiate between those two. A good physical exam and history necessary. Avoid positions that worse the pain.  An MRI sometimes necessary to r/o hnp. Ice, rest and stretching exercises will improved a piriformis syndrome. Also the use of nsaids meds sometimes indicated. Can take long. I went through ps symptoms in the past. Good luck.

: You are correct. Piriformis syndrome rarely manifests as yours, mainly it causes pain in the posterior aspect of the thigh, worse when getting up in the morning and some sensitive points in your buttock. However, if NCS reveals problem with the sciatic nerve, piriformis syndrome can't be rule out entirely or you have a nerve entrapment syndrome elsewhere on the sciatic nerve tract.
