If it is tailored: For liver mass, and technically adequate(i.e. no artifacts that might obscure anatomy), it would be nearly impossible to miss a large liver tumor.

No, not even 2 scans: Patients get CT scans all over the world, every day. As long as there is a good reason for the scan, it is fine to do. If repeated scans are planned, to follow some sort of serious illness, a patient can ask his doctor what other options there are, in order to decrease the total number of scans in his lifetime. Having repeated CT scans, over and over, can add up to much x-ray exposure.

my dad is 53 years old and in good shape. he was diagnosed with stage 4 secondary liver cancer; the primary is still unknown. he has had a ct scan, an endoscopy, and a colonoscopy done. will a pet scan show something more?

Possibly: More important is the pathology.  We rely on pathology and the immunochemistry.  The pet may be helpful but sometimes we do not find a primary.  This is called a cancer of unknown primary.

Need treatments: Most likely you will have needle biopsy of liver lesion, fortunately the the chemotherapy is very effective  be confident you will have excellent chance of remission, good example cyclist l armstrong  speak to your oncologist.

CT scan: A ct scan is typically the type of test used to find a liver tumor. It shows the soft tissues, organs, and blood vessels very well. A pet scan can be used to detect metastases or tumors that are too small for a ct scan to measure, but it involves nuclear tracers and is usually saved for after a ct scan shows a tumor. Xrays are used to look only look at bones.

can 2 ct scans , 4 us during last 4 years picked up liver cancer? ruq  pain since 2007 and no diagnosis  yet, would i be dead by now if it was cancer in 08?

Probably not cancer: 5 years of pain unlikely to be cancer, and certainly a liver tumor would grow enough in 4-5 years to show up on imaging studies. If you have been having unexplained pain for 5 years and nothing shows on ct or us, you may need endoscopy and/or nuclear studies to look at other possibilities (gallbladder, pancreas, bile ducts, intestines, etc.) - consult with a GI doc if you haven't done so already.

Unlikely: Liver cancer would have shown up with different pattern than a uniform image throughout.
