If prescribed, yes: This is a low-dose antidepressant medication which also has anti-pain properties.  It may  be given for other reasons as well -- such as to help with sleep.  If your physician has prescribed it after reviewing your health history, yes it is safe.

Depends: Elavil (amitriptyline) can interact with several other meds such that even a low dose can be toxic and some people don't metabolize well.  You should discuss with your prescriber your concerns.  If thinking of a suicide plan, tell them as well.  It's not a pleasant nor sure thing and other help is available if this isn't working.

Proceed With Caution: Using Elavil (generic amitriptyline) with nulev (generic hyoscyamine) may increase side effects such as drowsiness, blurred vision, dry mouth, heat intolerance, flushing, decreased sweating, difficulty urinating, abdominal cramping, constipation, rapid heart beats, confusion, and memory problems. The elderly are especially vulnerable to these side effects. Work closely with md.

I've asked a lot: of MD's this question.  Some start you off on the new med right after stopping the old one.   Some wait as much as two weeks.   You are mixing an herb with a Tricyclic, so I'd play it safe and wait awhile.   As a psychiatrist who knows about herbs.  Most don't.

Using Elavil (amitriptyline) with Ativan may increase dizziness, confusion, difficulty concentrating, impairment in thinking, and judgment.

Consider taking one medication at a time.
