the past 2 days my 18 wk daughter has had tears that leave salt. i googled & i'm now very scared could be cf! she has been on amoxicillin since sunday?

Test for CF is easy: With conjuntivitis or dry eyes, particles of whitish material can collect around the eyes.  This will likely go away whe your daughter is better.  However, CF is easily diagnosed by a sweat test.  If you are concerned, ask your doctor to do a sweat test.

Up to 18 months: If you have normal menstrual cycles, your cystic fibrosis carrier status likely has little effect on your fertility.  However, it can take a normal couple up to 18 months to achieve a conception, even when everything is perfectly normal.  Because you are a CF carrier (and your partner is not), there is a 50% chance your children will also be carriers of the CF gene.

Cystic fibrosis: Physiological changes in the CF gut lead to the accumulation of viscous (sticky) mucus and faecal material in the terminal ileum, caecum and ascending colon which form obstructing mucofaeculant impactions (walker et al, 2006). Contributing factors include fat malabsorption, abnormal intestinal mucins, low duodenal ph, deficient anion secretion, dysregulation of sodium and chloride absorption, othe.

Yes you can: Robitusson CF is an expectorant and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an antihistamine. I see that you are trying to avoid sedative effect during the daytime.You may use claritin, Allegra or zyrtec once at night as alternative.Generally less sedating than benadryl (diphenhydramine).

DM is better: Robitussin (guaifenesin) with dextromethorphan (also know asrobitussin dm) may be replaced with a Codeine based anti-tussive if it is prescribed by your doctor.

hello, need a bit of help here i have fibromyalgia and cf i have changed my diet drastically but need to take more gabapentin to combat bad pain i'm currently on 900mg 3 times a day but need to termperarly increase while my body gets ?

Can go up: Can go up to 1200mg 3x daily, however it would be wisest to do this under the suprevision of your GP rather than independently.  May also if not wining be useful for you to have a clinical review  - if the pain is abdominal some CF patients get pancreatitis and would be important to do lipase blood test to rapidly exclude this serious possibility. Duplicate therapy: These two medications will likely contain similar medications, making overdosing a possibility.

is it too late for my 16 year old daughter who has cf to take growth hormones? she started her period when she was 13 but is still growing very slowly

Accepted Answer

Probably too late : Usually growth plates have fused within a year after starting periods .  In the unlikely  situation of this not happening there may be a window for growth but care would require medication to prevent closure of growth plates while taking GH.  See if her doctor would consider studies to determine if growth plates have closed .

No interaction: Assuming you have symptoms for which guaifenesin, dextromethorphan, phenylephrine, and diphenhydramine (Benadryl) are indicated...there should be no interaction between these medications. Always read OTC medicine labels and ask the pharmacist whether your symptoms match the active ingredients! Sometimes less is more, so be careful with polypharmacy. Thank you for trusting HealthTap!
