hi, i have a bottle of ativan (lorazepam) that i have had for about 9 months that was prescribed to me.  is it okay for me to still use?  i haven't taken any.

Yes: If it was not left out in extremes of heat or cold, should still be effective, most medications will expire in about a year. If you are having anxiety that requires medication, consider talking to your doctor again about it, as ativan (lorazepam) is only a temporary fix, not a long standing fix.

Curious question: Lorazepam is a brain altering drug, but used more as a relaxing agent used to treat anxiety more than something like ADD. Why it was prescribed in your case is hard to speculate without the doctors records in hand.

Safe: If stored correctly, medications have a longer shelf-life than stated. Efficacy (not usually safety) is the possible concern. That is how well the medication will work. However, 2 years won't make much of a difference.

Probably not: Depending on when the bottle was first opened and how &amp; where it has been stored, it's likely that the medication is not as effective as when first obtained. If it's been stored in hot or damp conditions (e.g bathroom cupboard) it may have decomposed so may contain unwanted products of that process. Safest thing to do is to return to your pharmacy for them to dispose of.

Not sure what it is.: You don't say why you were taking the Ativan (lorazepam) or how you now feel awful.  The Ativan (lorazepam) itself is long ago out of your system, so it's not causing the problem.  Did you have a return of whatever symptom you had before, e.g., not being able to get to sleep?  Do you feel bad in a new way?  Assuming a doctor prescribed the ativan, (lorazepam) speak with him/her about what's happened; no need to continue to suffer.

Well --: A person could potentially develop tolerance with any of the benzodiazapines. I try to use selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.  Often also use buspar (buspirone). Non-pharmacologic strategies are crucial if you don't want to always have to rely on medications.
