can i start birth control a few days before my period? will i still get my period? i havent started it yet but wasnt sure if should wait until after this period ends to minimize any spotting. thanks very much

Yes: Should be ok and should not affect start of your period.  We ask that you start on day of your period to try and keep your cycles the same and not change the timing.  Starting a few days before should not have much effect.

Probably: When starting the pill at mid-cycle, you should expect some irregular and unpredictable bleeding that may come and go for several cycles.  By the end of the third or fourth pack of pills your periods should be coming only at the end of the pack as expected. Be patient for the pill to have time to suppress the ovaries and regulate the cycle.

Pelvic pain: You need to test for pregnancy and make sure there is no ectopic pregnancy. If the painful cramping persists then see the gyn specialist or emergency room.

Menstrual Cycle: Normal menstrual cycle is every 28 days (21-35 days normal), with about 5 days of bleeding (2-8 days normal). Some spotting a few days before your expected period is normal.

Not likely: Being on Birth control pills will prevent 95-97% of all pregnancies no matter when you have intercourse.  If you have a normal period in flow, timing and duration you are not pregnant.  Intercourse 2 days prior to your expected period has lower chance of pregnancy.  So when you combine all 3 of these factors, you are highly unlikely to get pregnant.  Best wishes!

Can be normal: If you didn't miss any pills then you probably have breakthrough bleeding. If you have been on the pill for at least three months and this is happening repeatedly, then change to a different formulation, perhaps one with a higher estrogen level. Not normal, get care: Any new or unexplained vaginal discharge needs professional evaluation. Colored discharge (yellow, green, tan, brown) often means infection. In sexually active women, STDs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trichomonas are frequent causes, although gonorrhea and chlamydia are uncommon at your age (30). In any case, see your doctor and take it from there. Good luck!

Breakthrough : Probably a breakthrough bleeding you had for some reason such as not taking bcp at the same time of the day , etc. and this breakthrough bleeding brought left over old menstrual blood out of the uterus. The brownish color comes from being old blood left in the uterus from the previous menstruation.
