i had a colonoscopy and endoscopy this morning. its been 5 hours. can i smoke marijuana?

: If you are a regular uses I don't see that these procedures would have any effect on you activities of life. You may not be aware that regular users have a four fold increase in the development of schizophrenia in their lifetime. Whether this allows it to emerge or triggers it in some has not been defined. Thus I can't recommend its use for anyone.

i've had 3 colonoscopies over the last 15 years. all negative. no polyps. non-smoker, non-drinker, normal weight. my mom died from colon cancer in 1997. smoked 20yr, avg. drinker, obese, bad diet. last screening 2016. how many years before next one?

: A negative colonoscopy is good for 10 years. 
So you  can wait but should have a repeat test in 2025/26. Of course if you have any symptoms like rectal bleeding or Anemia, that is an indication for repeating this test sooner than 10 years of gap.

Within an hour: Usually you can have fluids in recovery and should be able to eat  abreakfast within 2 to 3 hours. This depends on how you feel and if you have any nausea afterward. It would wise to start slowly and avoid greasy and acidic foods initially (eg, bacon sausage, orange juice). Toast, cereal, coffee/tea should be safe. Later in the day you may resume your regular diet.

Too vague: Depends on what was its purpose.  If it was for screening and nothing was found, usually that's it.  If it's to evaluate a particular problem like bleeding, your doctor will decide what other tests to do. Of course, if the colonoscopy finds something, there may be treatment offered.  Always know the purpose and the results of any test you get.  If unsure, ask the doc.

Yes, you can: A minority of patients prefer no anesthesia and with proper information and instruction, most specialists will perform a colonoscopy without anesthesia.  You are correct .... it is uncomfortable, perhaps very uncomfortable, but tolerable to those who are motivated to tolerate it. Good wishes:)

Liquids: No solid or soft foods ar allowed on the day of the prep. Any liquid that you can see through (clear liquids) is allowed--tea, black coffee, water, juces without pulp, broths, popsicles, hard candy (ie, jolly ranchers). Avoid any red colored fluids as they may give the tissue a bloody appearance and can be confusing.

i had colonoscopy and after the procedure i had no pain and almost 24 hours of it i start having pain is this normal?

Pain: Your pain, assume is abdominal, may not be related to your colonoscopy, unless you had excision or biopsies taken. Would suggest letting the physician who performed your colonoscopy know about the pain and keeping a log of your symptoms.

i am having a colonoscopy tomorrow and i am in the process of taking the moviprep. what am i to expect tonight and during the procedure? thank you x

Accepted Answer

Colonoscopy : You will have multiple loose bowel movements that will eventually turn to clear.  You may have soreness in the rectal area from the multiple bowel movements.  When you go for the procedure itself , you should not feel anything.  Afterwards the nurse will ask you to pass the gas that helped to inflate your colon and then they will send you home.  You may still be drowsy from the anesthesia after.
