i am on verapimil for heart arrythmias. i understand i shouldn't eat grapefruit. are there any other foods that are problematic with this medication?

Accepted Answer

No other foods: Avoid or limit ethanol use, as verapamil can increase blood levels. There are herbal supplements you should avoid, if verapamil is being used to treat high blood pressure. However, this is not relevant if you are taking it only for rate control of a supraventricular tachyarrhythmia.

Not likely: I am not aware of any gene that selects for generalized sinus tachycardia. I am familiar with clusters of atrial fibrillation that seem famiilial.

Any exercise: For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.

Stress?: Many causes - stress, thyroid abnormality or heart abnormality.  If the palpitations are bothersome, last longer than a few seconds or cause any symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath or dizziness see a doctor soon.

Increase H2O or redu: You have to compensate the water loss via sweat due to excess heat by either increase oral replacement of water/fluids, or reduce/stop the diuretic, or u may need to do both depending on severity of heat and duration of exposure. It is a rather complicated balance and u must do that diligently or you may get in trouble with dehydration or fluid overload. Use a weight-scale. Good luck.

Prevention/Treatment: Depending on the heart condition, patients need various types of medications to reduce symptoms of their heart disease or to reduce the chance for further heart episodes.. Common classes of medications include aspirin, beta blockers, ace inhibitors, statins, and diuretics.

Pseudofed: It would depend on the specifics of your heart condition.  The most common over-the-counter medicines that affect people with heart issues are those that contain pseudo-ephedrine, commonly called pseudofed.   These are usually cold and flu preparations.   Ask the pharmacist to direct you to brands without pseudofed, or look for ones labelled "hbp", as this typically means its safe for heart pts.
