coffee makes me want to pass stool almost immediately, i say about 15 mins after i drink it? is this normal? maybe have crohns based on colonoscopy i had last year(ulcer. term illeum:ascending colon) capsule endoscopy said i was clean recently. idea?

: What you are experiencing is not an uncommon reaction to coffee and does not indicate any disease. If you look at the positive side, a cup in the morning will facilitate a bowel movement and get you going for the day.
Have a healthy diet, exercise 30 minutes/day, drink plenty of water daily so your urine is mostly colorless, have safe sex, no tobacco alcohol weed or street drugs.

Colonoscopy: Best not to.  The less you have in you, the better so as to ensure the best visualization during your procedure.

Accepted Answer

Sure: That amount won't make any difference. But I'm a little concerned that bending this "rule" may lead you to bend a few more. Improper or inadequate prep for a colonscopy is the biggest reason many have to be repeated because the exam was suboptimal/inconclusive. You wouldn't want to repeat it. I would strongly encourage you to follow the prep instructions PRECISELY.  It's one day:)

Coffee ground diarrh: No this is not normal.  This could be sign of intestinal bleeding.   You should notify your GI doctor

You : You are absolutely right that clear liquids means pure liquids that you could see through.  This includes apple juice, soda, crystal light, clear broth, etc.  The idea is that this will not leave any residue in your colon.  Coffee is ok, although you can't see through it.  It does not leave residual fecal matter in the colon.  Orange juice is generally not the best choice unless it's sunnydelight.  I understand how this is often confusing.  Your pre-colonoscopy instructions from your doctor's office would generally give you a specific list of liquids that they allow.  Good luck!

Yes: In fact, most facilities where colonoscopies are performed, will make sure that you can handle some liquids/solid food before you leave.

: Probably you have written instructions about what you can and cannot eat and drink in the 1-2 days or so before the procedure. Usually only clear liquids are permitted, which does not include Ensure (unless they have a clear product that I don't know). Follow your instructions carefully:  you do not want to get half way through a colonoscopy that cannot be completed and must be done again!

Water and salts: Generally most colon preps are made of water and a mix of salts to both replace those expected to be washed out by the prep, but also to make it "neutral", so your body chemistry will not change much with the large volumes of fluid ingested. Substances to change the taste are also generally used too, although most peolpe still say it tastes terrible :(.

Probably yes: The usual dictum has been to remain on clear liquids the day before a colonoscopy exam. However, not uncommonly do we perform a colonoscopy on these patients and only find this out afterwards and usually the bowel preps are regarded as adequate.  Please discuss this issue with your performing colonoscopist before doing so however.

: This would likely be fine-you can take a small amount of water to take your medicines before any procedure, including a colonoscopy. Take the minimum amount of water needed to take the medicine. Good luck to you!
