Accepted Answer

Equal opportunity : Emotional disorders occur across the entire intellect spectrum. Some seem to cluster among the more intelligent (hard to define what that means), such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.  But defining those patients' intellect is difficult or specious at best.

i just found out that i have high intelligence (25). are there uni's that support this and offer a study year for non-students? 'cause nl doesn't.

High intgelligence: is good when used properly.  Contact your department of education for leads to other countries and universities if you are looking for scholarships and specialized education.  Don't let the idea of a high IQ block you from valuing the opinions of others.  There are many forms of intelligence and Emotional Intelligence (see work of Daniel Goleman) will be more useful in life than IQ.  Peace&amp;health.

: The level of intelligence someone has is the result of many factors, some of which are not under anyone’s control, like genetics. But, often if more time is devoted to studies, learning the information can occur regardless of the actual intelligence level. Testing can be done to determine how you learn best to enable you to be successful in your studies. School programs can perform this testing.

Lots!: Generally, if you have fewer or more genes or chromosomes than you're supposed to have, intelligence may well be affected. Other genetic/metabolic diseases can damage the brain because of the toxic build up of by products from dysfunctional metabolism which the body may have difficulty disposing of.

Many: Real psychosis?  As in having hallucinations or delusions?  Possibilities include schizophrenia, mania, drug abuse (especially stimulants), a variety of medical issues including brain tumor or trauma, metabolic abnormality, certain infections... the list is long.  If the person can be reasoned with, suggest that they see a doctor.  If not, you may need to call the police for your safety.

There are several.: Not sure what you mean by psychotic rage. If you mean unpredictable, explosive anger, then there could be a variety of reasons including head trauma, alcohol, drugs, psychiatric illnesses (e.g. Bipolar d/o, intermittent explosive d/o) or medical conditions including delirium. The persons should be evaluated ; treated asap to prevent injury to themselves or to others.

Delusions: In these cases, delusions are part of the psychotic phase, such as grandiose delusions in bipolar disorders or the bizarre delusions in schizophrenics.

That : That is a very tough question to answer.  A brief reactive psychosis normally lasts one day to less than one month.   First, i can not find literature that pins down an actual percentage for recurrence. Most often a person with a brief reactive psychotic episode will return to normal function and the majority will not suffer another psychotic event. Most often there is a markedly stressful triggering event.  When the psychosis occurs in the absence of a stressor or trigger the chance of a recurrence is higher. Chances or recurrence are also higher in people with particular types of personality disorders. It the psychotic event is acutally just the initial episode in someone with bipolar disorder (when depressed or manic) or in someone who is schizoprhenic then more psychotic episodes would be likely.

do anti-psychotics cause changes in insulin resistance, diabetes, or other metabolic disorders when they have been discontinued ?

Side effects: The patients I have treated who had marked increases in weight, triglycerides and blood sugar  on atypical antipsychotics, experienced normalization of these functions when the medications were stopped. However, I do not know if this uniformally occurs.

can a stroke in a child cause an intelligence deficit without a physical deficit?

Accepted Answer

Possible: That is possible, a child's brain is very plastic, ie able to recover function better than an adult. If the stroke was not large and not in an eloquent area of the brain (language, speech etc), the recovery of cognitive skills should be very good, especially if the child is very young. In fact, motor skills also make good recovery with rehab and ongoing play and encouragement. It's size & location.
