Yes, but...: Yes, but the type of hpv that causes abnormal pap smears in women doesn't cause any untoward symtpoms for men.  Also, there is no testing in men for that particular type of hpv.  For women, the relevant testing is the pap smear or an hpv dna test of the cervix.

Yes.: Some people (especially men, but also some women) can be 'carriers' of hpv and not have warty lesions or precancerous changes that are visible to the eye.  These 'silent carriers' may spread the human papillomavirus to sexual partners without knowing that they carry the virus.

: Good question. It was thought that immunity against HPV prevented new infections with the same virus type for a long time, perhaps for life. More recently, new infections with the same type are known to occur -- although it is often difficult to distinguish new infection from reactivation of an old one. Certainly long delayed reactivation sometimes occurs, but as late as 30 yr may be rare.

HPV can cause cancer: Hpv infections an cause genital warts or even cancer, although this isn't likely.   Any persistent sores should prompt a visit to a dr.   The hpv vaccine can help lower the risks of warts, female cancers (vaginal, vulvar, cervical), male cancers (penis, anus) and oral cancers.

Simplistic: There are dozens of different strains of hpv. Almost everybody has met one or another of the strains that cause skin warts. Here's hoping that either you do not meet the strains that cause cancer of the penis, or if you do meet ig, that you don't develop it, or if you do develop it, that you get the lesions excised before it can hurt you badly.

: Yes, this is quite frequent. However, reactivation of HPV (e.g. with an abnormal Pap smear) is increasingly rare after age 50 or thereabouts, and Pap smears usually are no longer recommended. Your wife is very unlikely to ever have cervical cancer or any other adverse effect from HPV. If your wife remains concerned, she should discuss this with her gynecologist.

: For some women, HPV just clears, but for others it goes dormant. I would recommend that you continue to have regular Pap smear tests, alone every 3 years, or with an HPV test every 5 years or as recommended by your doctor.  If there are any cell changes, you will catch them early and be able to have those cells removed by colposcopy. Don’t worry, just don’t miss your Pap smears.

: Unfortunately, you can't tell if the infection has been in latent or not. Of course, if you have HPV lesion(s) then risk of transmission is very high. Fortunately, HPV infection often becomes dormant (latent) so HPV-infected people are not the true carriers. A majority of Americans above 30 years old have been exposed to HPV &amp; that's why we do not advocate HPV vaccine beyond 26 years of age.
