Concentration: Simplest way, if you have lets say 100 particles in 5 liter of fluid, the concentration is 20 per liter. If you now have only 3 liter of fluid, the concentration is now 33.3.

my bun was 20 today. can dehydration cause it to be higher? mine has always been on low end. creatinine is normal, no other symptoms or abnormal tests. i have barely been drinking a bottle of water per day for quite a while?

: Yes, there are several things which cause high BUN without affecting much serum creatinine: mild dehydration, eating high protein and taking steroids. Moderate to severe dehydration can increase serum creatinine too along with a much higher BUN, usually the ratio BUN/creat will be above 20 with dehydration.
Yes, your intake of only one bottle of water (500 cc) a day is low.

: Labs are basically near normal, except for a lower GFR (less than normal passage of urine through the kidney), which can indicate potential damage eventually from dehydration.  Get a referral to a nephrologist for guidance, and increase your hydration with clear fluids.

Kidney disease?: Get with your physician. I trust you drink adequate water when you&#x27;re thirsty. He/she will rule diabetes mellitus in or out, then evaluate you for the ability to concentrate your urine. If you are not able to do this, you will then be tested to see whether you have pituitary diabetes insipidus, or renal interstitial disease. This is serious. Get it looked at now.

Kidney related ?'s: A high creatinine in the urine while dehydrated is not unusual, but your husband as a diabetic should seen his nephrologist , as renal (kidney) decompensation is a serious problem requiring constant monitoring in diabetic patients especially.

Bun/creatinin ratio: Greater than 20 in the absence of GI bleeding usually indicate intra vascular volume depletion. If no peripheral edema discuss need for fluid restrictions with your doctor

Yes it can: This is referred to as acute kidney injury. Generally it is reversible with rehydration. We will see the BUN rise first and then if severe, the creatinine will also rise.

Accepted Answer

No: Most of our "normal" lab values are from adults. Babies and young children should have a "low" creatinine compared to adult norms as they are normal for their age. It is not from dehydration. If dehydrated, creatinine may be high.
