Not typical: Average age of diagnosis is 55.  Can be seen as early as the 20's  most commonly between 40 and 70 years of age.

Not to worry: ALS is fortunately quite RARE but gets a lot of attention lately (The Lou Gehrig Story was the first  years ago) 
MS or Multiple Sclerosis is much more common and more benign. Both diseases do strike at young aged people 30-40 year old most common age range. Symptoms are very confusing and so varied that I will not list them
Maybe you and your doctor should discuss WHY you are worried about this??

Advice: We do not use research drugs here onsite, but would suggest there is little to lose if one has ALS, and a new drug protocol would be of potential value.  A nearby medical school should be helpful to guide your friend to a local or national study group.

Neurologist: A neurologist studies the nervous system and is best suited to address your concerns.
The appointment will consist of a history, physical exam, and the request for additional info including labs and possibly an EMG (electromyography- nerve test)

ALS: As far as I know no one be will put through the extensive and, sometimes, uncomfortable tests for ALS unless they are truly symptomatic and all other possibilities have been ruled out. I would suggest speaking to your primary care physician to discuss whatever symptoms you may be experiencing. If nothing else shows up, locate a good therapist to work on anxiety reducing strategies.

i've only had one injection and have been using the pull out method. i had a regular cycle for 2 months but didn't get one  for this month. ive als?

Depo?: Usually the depo shot is reliable against pregnancy soon after receiving it. Often you don't have cycles on the medication. Do a pregnancy test to make sure and get your depo shot every 12 weeks. All the best. Remember it does not protect you against a STI.

Genetic counseling: In 90% of cases, there is only one family member with ALS.  You can find some useful information here: http://www.alsa.org/about-als/genetic-testing-for-als.html   Before jumping to genetic testing, you might do some research and consider consulting a genetic counselor.

friends mom has als. friend got tested and shows positive for familial als. she is 50 with no symptoms. is there a chance she may not get als?

Possibility: There are several genes associated with familial ALS and the majority are autosomal dominant with adult onset. There is one gene that is autosomal recessive that can have adult onset. So it would really depend upon what gene was tested for but there is a probability she will develop ALS if it is an autosomal dominant gene. However, clinical variation exists and it is hard to say for absolute.
