: If you are not comfortable or unsure about the medication your Doctor prescribed then it is advisable to get a second opinion from a Psychiatrist after you have had a complete physical exam by your Primary Care Physician to rule out any underlying illness. A Clinical Psychologist can also help you with psychotherapy.

Understand: Understand that Kava is a tranquilizer/sedative: it will make you sleepy. Added to your other meds you could be dopey and accident-prone. Do not drive or work around machinery if you use it.

i threw away the ativan that the doctor gave me because it doesn't mix well with my other meds plus i don't want to get addicted,i drink tea every night for anxiety and i'm wondering which of these is the best- valerian root,kava,or chamomile?

See below.: It's great you decided to try less addictive ways to reduce your anxiety. Chamomile is probably the safest tea to help you relax. You may want to drink less if you  take aspirin or another blood thinner with it. Valerian is helpful for sleep and anxiety, but it may cause insomnia, upset stomach and irregular heart beat in some people. Kava has been linked with a few reports of liver disease.

Kava has been: associated with cases of liver damage. Don't recommend it.  I don't  know your medical history, but the safest route in general is to discuss herbals or supplements with your doctor.

See below: Kava kava has been shown to have some relaxation effects. However it also has been associated with liver damage. It's impossible to say how much kava could be dangerous because 1) the cause of the liver damage is unclear & 2) the amount of kava in a given preparation is not standardized. It's recommended that kava only be used under a doctor's supervision.

Kava + Strattera (atomoxetine): Kava kava has stimulant property.  Strattera (atomoxetine) also is a stimulant.  There is no reason for the combination to be a problem.

Yes: There is no problem with either . How much kava kava should be consumed is another issue.

Depends: Green tea is not recommended, it has stimulant properties. Chamomile or herbal mint is probably fine but there should be no real tea leaves in the products. You can also just mix a little ginger, lemon, and honey in hot water and kids enjoy it just as well as tea.
