Aphthous stomatitis: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis or canker sores the most common observable lesion by the dentists. The topical anesthetic otc application is recommended. Individual ulcers typically last 7-10 days. Rec.: see your dentist if concerned. Smoking and drinking is not good for your body, but has nothing to do with this condition. Rec. If concerned, see your dentist for comprehensive investigation.

No sure answer: There is no sure answer to this question. Stress has been associated with canker sores.  Some have suspected that this may be from strep mutans- an organism found normally in the mouth and considered responsible for dental caries.  Have you had your teeth cleaned at least twice yearly, flossed daily,  and brushed thoroughly at least 2x daily?  Good dental hygiene may help.

Dental evaluatin: See a dentist and get everything checked, including your bite.  Everything going on in your mouth is related  and a good exam with help you. Canker sore have several causes associated with them including stress, trauma, sensitivity to SLS, vitamin deficiency

Gingivitis: Acute inflammation of the gums can be caused by Herpes virus and bacteria. An unusual infection called acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG) can be very troublesome and is caused by the Herpes virus and can be complicated by bacterial superinfection. It can be treated by acyclovir and vancyclovir. See your healthcare provider ASAP.

Perhaps: You may be overdoing it, traumatically injuring your soft tissues and your teeth.  Please review your oral hygiene regimen with your Dentist or Hygienist who can evaluate it’s efficacy.  For example, if you do not floss or WaterPik daily you greatly increase the chance of tooth loss due to gum disease.  Please seek professional guidance.

Possible RUS: If you have a bunch of ulcers you should see an oral surgeon or oral medicine specialist to find out why. It might be  Herpes or Recurring Ulcerative Stomatitis which is painful but not dangerous. Your dentist will diagnose and treat your ulcers.  Good Luck.

The nerves that connect to your teeth & an oral ulcer area are closely related & could cause confusion on the source. See your dentist to make sure you don't have a tooth issue in conjunction w a canker sore. The tooth needs urgent attention and the ulcer should resolve in a few days. Good luck!

Yes: It can be hard to precisely map the source of pain.
Fortunately canker sores resolve on their own within 2 weeks.  If no improvement or worsening your dentist can check for other causes of gum disease.

It can also be a autoimmune problem.    If your canker sores are large, frequent and many you should talk to your doctor about your immune system.
