Not enough: Shellfish allergy can be life-threatening, especially if you have breathing difficulties when you eat it.  Taking vitamin c is not enough to guarantee that you will prevent a reaction.  If you have a shellfish allergy, you should not eat it at all.  It's also a good idea to see a doctor about this allergy and make sure you don't have others.

Don't waste your $: G. biloba failed clinical trials. Ineffective. Ginseng is 1 of those bogus "ancient wisdom" things. Its use is based on a SUPERSTITION called the "doctrine of signatures:" because the root looks like a headless man, the prescientific ancients had this delusion that it would cure things. It doesn't. Be skeptical. Think critically. Arm yourself with modern knowledge, not ancient superstition.

Accepted Answer

500 mg: Normal and safe intake of elemental magnesium is 500 mg.  Magnesium oxide undesirable since less than 20% of magnesium is absorbed.  Magnesium gluconate or other organic chelate like aspartate or oratate is preferable, with better absorption profile. Important figure is not weight of entire chelated compound, because Amino Acid is heavier than oxide.  Go by the &quot;elemental&quot; magnesium on the label.

if you are getting blood tests to check vitamin levels, and it says "no supplements 24 hours", can you still have tums (calcium carbonate) if not checking calcium levels?

I guess so: Blood vitamin levels can be very deceptive. You can have normal levels and still be deficient because it is the vitramin content within cells that really counts. Vitamin therapy and basic understanding of its uses is largely in the hands of doctors that practice complementary alternative medicine. Homeopathists, naturopath doctors and cheiropracters are often knowledgeable in this field.

i changed my vitamins to evening. i stopped my calcium carbonate for a week. i spaced out longer when i take other meds after thyroid meds. my estradiol is now 3,778 and it was 752 last week. tsh- 0.96, ft4- 1.9, ft3- 13. is this bad? im 8w pregnant?

: I wonder if you had another question before. It will be more helpful if we know the thyroid panel results before you changed the way of taking thyroid med and we also need the units used for FT3 and FT4. Estradiol level varies a lot during pregnancy so I do not worry much about the change.

can't take calcium carbonate for acid stomach because of allergies. is there a magnesium alternative?

Accepted Answer

Other: Calcium medications can cause constipation. You should trying a histamine blocker like (zantac (ranitidine) or pepcid).  If this doesn't work you should try a ppi like Prevacid or prilosec.  If symptoms persists you should consult with GI dr.

Yes: About 10-15% of people who are shellfish allergic (shrimp, lobster, etc) are also clinically sensitive to mollusks (clams, squid(calamari), octopus). Ask your allergist before introducing mollusks to your diet.

will imitation crab trigger a shellfish allergy?

Accepted Answer

No: Imitation crab meat is made from fillets of Alaska pollock. As long as you don't have a history of fish allergy you shouldn't have a problem. You should be careful however, because some manufacturers that produce these products also manufacture shellfish products in the same facility which could cause cross-contamination.

has anyone become immuned to having a shellfish allergy after doing allergy shots?  is that treatment available?

Accepted Answer

Not currently: This is not currently an fda-approved treatment of shellfish allergy.  But there are some current clinical trials looking at desensitization protocols for food allergies.

i have a shellfish allergy and put my hands in my jacket pockets while leaving the restaurant. did washing the jacket remove all allergen?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Would not expect any allergen to survive washing.  Are you concerned about airborn allergen that may have deposited onto the jacket while you were eating?  I applaud your vigilance, but rest easy that you are out of harm's way with regard to that particular evening.
