Not really: You can start your next pack of birth control pills and this will stop you over the next few days. This is likely to be the same as if you just took your pills normally. The Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD is a great birth control method and it often stops periods.

Possible: You can start a new pack early and if needed you can double up on the pill for a day or so to stop the bleeding.  I sometimes get this request when women going on their honeymoon expect to be on their period at that time.

Space out: Birth control pills that contain 30 (thirty) micrograms of ethinylestradiol (EE) and 0.150 mg of levonorgestrel can be taken for 84 days in a row, followed by a 7 day break. 
Another pill with a combination of 20 (twenty) micrograms of EE and 0.090 mg (90 micrograms) of levonorgestrel that could be taken for a year (Lybrel) does not seem to be available any more.

Yes: You can take it with skipping over the "blank" days in the packet. These are hormone free and that is when you get your period. Just go to the next packet instead of taking these. 
It is wise to once every 4 mo let yourself have a period though.

I : I don't believe that the birth control were the cause of your current situation, but I do think they were "hiding" the underlying problem that you and your doctor were treating in the first place. I think you are correct that the problem then was "hormonal imbalance". The pill is effective at controlling symptoms, but does not correct this imbalance at its root cause.
It is true that fertility varies during the month. Your most fertile days, assuming you have a regular 28-day cycle, are approximately days 10 to 14. (this assumes that you ovulate on about day 14.) when you ovulate, the egg does not last very long; in contrast, sperm can hang around in the vagina for up to a week, which is why the days before the egg is released can lead to pregnancy.
Whether to get further hormonal evaluation at this time depends on several things, including your age, whether you are overweight, and whether your cycles are regular. If your body is at a healthy weight, and another hormonal imbalance is present, i recommend treatment with bioidentical hormone therapy, which even in low doses can enhance fertility.

Depot shot: The depotshot, which is given every 3 months intramuscularly ideally stops menstrual periods. Also, intrauterine devices (IUDs) that are covered with the hormone levonorgestrel (which is in some birth control pills) ideally stop menstrual periods.

DMPA: What type of shot?  The depo-provera shot?   Are you over weight?  There are a lot of questions that need to be answered before an opinion can be given. You should consult with the Dr that gave you the shot.
