The consensus is that ripe bananas in moderation help treat constipation but unripe bananas &/or lots of bananas worsen constipation. Another idea is that if you are "cold" from a chinese medicine perspective then bananas will worsen constipation, but if you have "excess heat" then bananas will help. So it depends on several factors...

Calories: To gain weight simply eat more calories than you burn off.  Try to maintain a balance of proteins, fats, carbohydrates and fiber to meet your nutritional needs. Increase water and fiber if constipatopn occurs.

Depends on u: Generally, bananas are constipating.  If your experience is that they make it worse, steer clear.  Traditional medical knowledge is that they are constipating.  Lack fiber, etc.  I have had the rare patient tell me that they were useful for moving their bowels.  In those cases, i'd say, "go for it."  otherwise, if your guts are a big slow-down, i'd steer clear of the 'nanners.  Be well.

Is the stool hard?: If the stool is hard, you have a diagnosis of "constipation." you may offer a fruit other than banana (prunes, apricots, pears) to mix in with the cereal.  You may also offer a more diluted cereal with breastmilk or formula.
