: Even if that tiny amount of air entered a vein I think you wouldn't suffer any harm. Some experts feel that it would take 200 ml of air to be lethal, but some  feel that 20ml may cause harm.

: If you're shown proper technique and location (depends on medication, volume, etc), it's difficult to hit an artery or major vein. If you DON'T follow proper technique, then it's fully possible to hit an artery or vein. Air bubbles in an artery can cause air embolism (essentially a stroke). In a vein they may do similar, although not nearly as likely.

if there were air bubbles in a syringe used to inject you intramuscular would you know by now if you had an air embolism if you were injected 5 days ago?

Accepted Answer

: You need not worry, it is unlikely to have caused air embolism. Intramuscular injection is not likely to cause air embolism, and quite often the air bubble may have been absorbed or not even get to the muscle because it may have been dissipated in the process of injection. How is the site of injection? If it is okay there, then you are okay.

He could die: Depending on the volume and technique, several things can happen.He gets lucky, and nothing happens. He gets infected from the site, with blood poisoning which could be treated. However, this med can modify the heart rhythm and could put his heart into sudden irregular rhythm, resulting in death.

Injecting Lidocaine: Epedefrine (two different drugs, Epinephrine is most likely, Ephedrine (ephedrine sulfate) is less likely) combined with 2% Lidocaine would cause a very dramatic sensation of flight or fright. Heart racing, possibly skipped heart beats, probably irregular heart beats, and could very likely lead to serious cardiac injury or death. Don't do it!
the medicines would get into circulation and affect you in about 30 secs.

Yes but why?: Lidocaine is used by docs to treat heart rhythm problems.  This is done by injection in a controlled manner.  It can be toxic if too much or too strong.   Discuss this with your doc if you have a burning desire to do this.

Lidocaine venous: A small amount might be used to reduce pain of other injected meds or cardiac arrhythmias, larger amounts would cause you to have a seizure and cardiac arrest.

Probably won't help: This probably won't help. I hope your rash has been diagnosed. A common cause of "painful swollen" rash is herpes zoster (shingles). Severe genital herpes can be similar. Either one of these should be treated with an anti-herpes drug such as valacyclovir. Check back with your doctor if there is any doubt or uncertainty about the cause. Good luck.
