If you suspect you have it, see your dermatologist or pcp for treatment as soon as possible. If you didn't have chicken pox as a child, consider both varivax and zostavax as well.

Because.: Many illnesses that are mild when they occur in childhood are more more severe when contracted as an adult. It may be that the immune response is over-reactive in the adult organism & that this hyper-response is at least partially responsible for the severity of symptoms in adults. Mononucleosus is typically worse when occurring in adults and adolescent. In younger children its just like a cold.

Depends: As little as 1/2 hr in the same room with an active case can give the disease to susceptible people. If you never had it, you could get the vaccine within a few days of exposure &amp; my avoid it. Some adults may have had it without symptoms and be immune. However, make every effort to avoid it as adult cases can be deadly (chickenpox pneumonia). Incubation is 10-21 days.

Should be vaccinated: Chicken Pox in adults is a severe illness. While your wife will not catch the virus from your vaccinated child, she is still at risk for catching it from the community. It would be prudent for her to have the vaccine while she is not pregnant, to reduce the risk of contracting it in the future either while pregnant or not.

Chickenpox: You should have a titer done to see if you are immune. If it comes back negative then you should be immunized. Many people have chicken pox but don't remember or fon't have enough symptoms for it to be diagnosed.
