Yes: It is not abnormal to have a patient come in with a toothache that turns out to be a sinus infection. Patients will describe pain in the upper teeth often not a specific tooth and pressure or aching and throbbing of their teeth. If the tooth is abscessed the infection can eat away the bone at the end of the root and provide a path to the sinus. Infection follows the path of least resistance.

Oro-antral opening: This occurs when the roots of the maxillary teeth communicate with the maxillary sinus. When the tooth is removed, there is an opening between the sinus and your oral cavity. This usually heals on its own without incident. To help promote healing and to avoid repair surgery, do not blow your nose until the area is completely healed. Allow your dentist to monitor the site.

Sinus lift stats?: Having a tooth extracted does not result in the need for a sinus lift. If you want the tooth replaced with an implant retained crown and the sinus is hanging down low, you might require a sinus lift to increase the amount of bone necessary to place that implant fixture. I am not aware of any statistics regarding the answer to your question. Each individual is different.

Sinus: Your sinus cavity will show up on dental x-rays.  Your dentist did not mention this because it is routine.  Do not worry about this
