Yes: A low TSH usually means that you are have a high level of thyroid hormone in your system and hyperthyroidism can be associated with hair loss. Usually the hair becomes softer and finer with hyperthyroidism as opposed to the hair loss with hypothyroidism which is usually associated with dry coarse hair.

Generally low: Tsh will lead to an increased tendency for hair to break due to poor protein in the hair shaft, but it's not true hair loss. It will restart growing normally when your hypothyroidism is correctly treated with the right dose of brand name T4 replacement.

Wrong assumptions: Iron level not relevant. "Stress" probably not a factor. Very low TSH because of overdosed thyroid probably not part of it. Thin hair on top is very common as women get older. Other meds? Birth control? Menstrual history? Pregnancies? Weight change? When you see a dermatologist be prepared to detail these items. You might be helped by spironolactone or dutasteride.

Imaging: If not done so, proper imaging of the thyroid is indicated, including ultrasound and nuclear thyroid uptake scan. You may be suffering from hashimoto's thyroiditis, an immunologic condition  that affects your thyroid gland causing inflammation and often leads to an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism). Hashimoto's disease is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States.

Thyroid disease: A "TSH of 4.2" is certainly elevated in most lab determinations.  "T3" is the hormone produced in the thyroid gland, and apparently is being produced in adequate amounts.  Most hair loss in women is from either genetic causes or from excess male hormone production.  Because of the relatively high TSH, you may have hypo-thyroidism, which is treatable.

: Hair loss as people get older especially in mid-life is not uncommon and not necessarily due to disease. When we make less new cells than the cell turn- over in the body, we call that - aging-  And all cells tend to be affected including the Skin and Hair Cells. The Dermatologist or the Skin &amp; Hair Beauticians can sometimes help. But not to worry, One is still very valued and Special.

Hair loss: Another common cause of hair loss is iron deficiency. If ferritin normal, see a dermatologist.
