should i use plan b? i was on a 3 day course of bactrim and had sex and the condom broke. i am on ortho tri cyclen lo for 7 years.  i am concerned that the bactrim may have effected my bc pill. should i take  plan b?

Plan B: If the condom was unreliable and broke, would take plan B as precaution, especially with Bactrim use during the time frame.

If : If taken within the first three days after intercourse, Plan B is 75% to 85% effective in preventing pregnancy.  If taken within 12 hours of having sex, the efficacy is even higher than that.  Add that you were using a condom and did not ejaculate into her, the odds of pregnancy are very, very slim.  That being said, nothing is impossible, so if she misses her period this month, she may want to take a pregnancy test just in case.

No harm done but...: It won't hurt you to use plan b twice in 5 days; however, it may not prevent pregnancy to use it in this way.  Plan b works by delaying ovulation.  There is a limit to how often you can successfully delay ovulation in any given month.  A second round may not be effective to prevent pregnancy for a second episode of intercourse.    If you need it often, you might consider regular birth control.

Be careful: Smoking doesn't make emergency contraception less effective but the combination of may increase the albeit rare risk of blood clots - again this risk is still quite low.

No: No, it does not become less effective.  It is however, EMERGENCY contraception, and you should consider a different, daily form of contraception that will be more effective.

my fiancee used plan b about an hour after we had sex. she is 203 lbs will it work?

Accepted Answer

It might: She took it right away which is a good thing.  It's possible that it may not work given her weight.  She can ask her doctor for a prescription for another emergency contraceptive pill called Ella (ulipristal acetate) to keep at home in case she needs it in the future.  Ella (ulipristal acetate) may be more effective for women with higher body weights.  But Plan B is her best bet over the counter.

Relatively safe: The Plan B that you took should keep you from becoming pregnant.  That said, the "pull out" method works as well as not bothering to do anything.  You should take a multivitamin daily, regardless, as it is always possible that you could conceive.

5 days: It is unusual to have symptoms longer than 5-7 days. If they last longer or if you have worrisome symptoms such as excessive bleeding see your doctor. All the best.

Not recommended: Plan b's side effect is delayed period; however, you should not be using it to stop having periods, as that is not its indication for use.  Talk to your doctor about using standard birth control pills in a manner that would stop periods.

Yes: Plan b is safe and effective - it works over 85% of the time if used within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex and about 80% if used within 120 hours (5 days).  There are few complications, but there are side effects occasionally, like nausea and headache.
