Caltrate D3: An excellent product is sold by life extension foundation, www.Lef.Org.  Very healthy.  Feeling weak is a symptom that you should discuss with your doctor.  Many causes for this e.g. Anemia or low thyroid etc.

been taking 3 caltrate everyday to fight my osteopenia.    i usually spread them out but this morning i took all 3 without thinking.  should i worry?

No: You might not absorb all the calcium today but no worries.  Spread them out as usual tomorrow.

Yes: Generally the answer is yes.  Although not as important with coumadin, (warfarin) many medications should not be taken with calcium supplements, given the risk of the calcium binding the medicine and not allowing it to be absorbed.  The most importat thing to remember about Coumadin (warfarin) is consistency - when you take it, diet (especially foods high in vitamin k such as green, leafy vegetables), etc.

Oversimplified.: If one is vitamin k deficient, it is true that ingested calcium tends to go into the arteries and not into bone because osteoblasts function poorly and don't take calcium into bone.  In addition, those who get their calcium from their food have fewer fractures compared with those on calcium pills.  Elevated osteocalcin correlates with vit k deficiency and it's treatable by taking vit k orally.

my husband had a blood test to cheeck calcium levels 6 months ago it was low and told to use caltrate plus now dr said to stop cause it's to high why?

Get a consult: You don't treat a lab value. Reference ranges are set so that a few % of healthies fall outside. A true low serum calcium in an adult who appears healthy is uncommon (calculate ionized calcium, which is what matters, based on albumin), and possible hypoparathyroidism or renal calcium wasting should be worked up. I trust vitamin d levels have been checked. Endocrinology consult is in order.

Yes: You can take caltrate (calcium pill) while on birth control pills. To be safe, you should take the one in the am and the other at dinner (some minerals in calcium may bind with other pills if taken at the same time).  To be extra safe, you can ask your pharmacist as well.  But the short answer is yes.

my dr. has put me on 50, 000 units of vitamin d2-1 per week.  is it okay for me to continue taking my caltrate 600+d soft chews? i take 2 of those a day which would be an additional 800 vitamin d3 per day.

You : You probably could for the calcium but should't need the extra vit d in it. If you take 2 extra strength Tums (calcium carbonate) that'll get you nearly as much calcium without the extra vit d.

can i take fish oil supplements and caltrate while pregnant? i was on them prior.

Discuss with your OB: Some fish oil supplements are derived from high mercury containing sources which would be bad for the baby. Please discuss your vitamins with your OB who should be aware of your intake. I assume you are on prenatal vitamins  which are formulated for your needs during this time.  Good luck.

Accepted Answer

No: Boron and d3 are safe on birth control. Just balance calcium with magnesium and zinc. Birth control tends to throw off someone's zinc copper balance, giving too much copper and low zinc.

Md evaluation: High intake of calcium can cause elevated levels in the blood. This often occurs in the setting of associated kidney dysfunction. Other causes like hyperparathyroidism, sarcoidosis must be investigated..
