Careful, careful: If diabetic, then the callus and wound need to be seen by a wound care expert immediately.  Callus is the body's attempt to protect an injured area.  It can hide a serious ulcer and so in diabetics, it needs to be removed immediately and the ulcer underneath explored.  Callus is thick, dry tissue and it can crack, thus tearing the delicate tissues underneath.  This is a potentially serious problem.

Callus: Callus can be a sign of an area on the foot that have excessive pressure; as a result of this, callus forms to protect the foot. You can bathe the feet in warm water and use a sugar exfoliant with a loofah to remove the excess skin. Do not use a blade at home to remove the callus. Use only a loofah with sugar exfoliant and warm water.

: A callus will form to help protect an area of constant and chronic pressure and irritation  after a while the callus can become painful. A podiatrist can make a custom orthotic to help offload the pressure points. Severe problems can require surgery   Spenco is a material to help reduce friction and provide some cushion.

Swelling: If you have any swelling in your feet it can cause indentations from you shoes and socks.   Calluses are caused by pressure and irritation.  Any time the skin is irritated it produces dead layers of skin.  These become dense and hard.

However, if you are healthy and the open callus does not appear infected (pus, very painful with walking, fever, etc), you can do local care daily with cleaning the wound with peroxide, keep it clean with dressing and keep it dried, the wound will heal in a week or so.

Have it looked at: If your asking...Better safe than sorry. Is there are an underlying ulcer or is it just a callous..Is there any warty tissue present? Why is it happening? These are all things a podiatrist will help you figure out.

Wetter is Better: Petroleum jelly is nearly as helpful as soaking your feet in water before removing callous.
