Consultation with cardiothoracic surgeon.
May need coronary angio if not done yet.
Sometimes we have to do some bypass grafts at the same operation.

Fosamax (alendronate) & hearts: Fosamax does not contribute to calcium deposits in the coronary arteries. Fosamax works only on bone metabolism to inhibit the breakdown of bone when exercise, vitamin d and calcium intake are inadquate.

There are any of a: number of areas that could be calcified. Some are of more clinical importance than others. Without a specific report from the ultrasound it is difficult to suggest whether this is concerning for you or not. This should be discussed with your doctor and you should express your specific concerns. If you don't get a reasonable answer or explanation then be more assertive about your concerns.

Very safe but...: Vitamin d3 is very safe ; of tremendous benefit for preventing many illnesses. It helps our bodies to absorb calcium. I advise everyone to take d in the fall ; winter months. But it's also wise to take vitamin k (or eat foods rich in vit k) as that helps assure the calcium goes into our bones ; doesnnot wind up in our arteries or heart valves. Cardiologist: You need to consult with a cardiologist for testing.  In the meantime I would not engage in vigorous sporting activities.  If you feel like you are almost passing out, have chest pain / pressure or a heart rate over 115 you should go to the ER to have it checked immediately.

Goals of care: I'm sorry to hear about your father.  Now is the time to have a family meeting with your father, his primary doctor and relevant specialists to discuss "goals of care".  What does your father wish to have done to him and what are his values for how he wants to live the rest of his life?  These are difficult discussions to have, but they need to happen sooner rather than later.

Calcification in the thoracic aorta is not necessarily atherosclerosis; however, atherosclerosis is often found upon further investigation.  Other risk factors that should be addressed include smoking cessation and blood pressure control.  Your primary physician can manage these and discuss further testing.

Calcium: Calcification is simply a sign of arteriosclerosis - nothing more. If you smoke, stop. If you're obese, lose weight. Follow a vegetarian or mediterranean diet. Be sure your BP is controlled.  Exercise regularly. If your 10 year risk is &gt;7.5%, begin a statin. (there are online calculators to help determine your 10 year risk).

Coronary calcium: Due to damage to the inside layer of coronary (heart) arteries, cholesterol and other cells deposit in between the layers of the artery. There are various names- cholesterol plaque, atheroma, "blockage", etc.  As these plaques advance, the body will calcify them.  The presence and degree of coronary calcification can be measured easily with special software on a CT scanner.
